- CGES hosted the third annual American & German healthcare forum with Germany's Minister of Health Ulla Schmidt and about 120 US and German experts on the campus of the U of M. The 2-day conference featured keynotes by Minister Schmidt, Hubert H. Humphrey, III, and Dr. Uwe Reinhardt that stirred participants. You can read or listen to most of the presentations here. The German daily taz covered the conference with an appreciative article. Two special events brought together conference speakers and attendees with the larger community also: a "Wellness Walk" led by Ulla Schmidt and Goldie, the Gopher, emphasized the benefits of daily exercise in prevention (as little as 3,000 extra steps per day will keep the doctor away); a conference dinner with great jazz by the Clearwater Hot Club and a fun talk on "Music and Culture: Beyond Identity" by our own Alex Lubet (U of M School of Music) rounded out the full program with an enjoyable social evening. Topic for next year's forum: Healthcare and Quality.
- From June 17 to July 9, CGES convened its sixth "Sprachakademie Wittenberg" in Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Berlin. Twelve US teachers of German from the Midwest and other parts of the US won full fellowships to this successful program. They returned home with new enthusiasm for teaching German, with the latest cultural materials, and with lots of great stories to share with their students. As in previous years, the Sprachakademie was financially supported with a generous grant also from the Max Kade Foundation.
